The modern globalization has a massive impact on the human’s life mainly given the prevailing technological advancements. An endless number of new inventions are born each day thus provoking even greater impact on human life. This paper is about a case study on SMARTBOARD as a hardware invention. This paper begins by introducing the invention and how it took the world from darkness to the light in terms of education. A brief history of the invention and how it became successful is also demonstrated. The paper also brings out the advantages and disadvantages of that hardware invention. Typically, SMARTBOARD refers to an interactive whiteboard that uses Smart Technologies to initiate collaborative learning in education. SMARTBOARD is part of an entire collaborative learning system that includes the whiteboard, a projector, a computer, and the respective software.
Sometimes back, Teachers around the world utilized SMARTBOARD technology, but it was hardly the same as today. At first, no one knew about the technology, and nobody had an idea of how it could change people’s education life (SMART Technologies, 2014). Back then only, blackboard and chalkboard existed, but later whiteboards, which were then using overhead projectors, made interactive whiteboard become more significant. Toward the 21st century, it became common for the majority of the institutions to use the SMARTBOARD. A good example is when Sally McKeon stated that “we use the SMARTBOARD in so many ways. We start in the morning using them for registration. The children touch their name or their picture. They can copy over their name with a pen to practice the letter shapes….” This obviously shows the importance of the SMARTBOARD.
In 1987, David Martin and Nancy Knowlton established the idea of the SMARTBOARD which based in the U.S. Hence, the sponsor for the SMARTBOARD invention was a Canadian company, which today benefits from the resulting profits. Turning to the recent decade, 2011 marks SMARTS 25th anniversary as a company and the 20th anniversary of the SMARTBOARD interactive whiteboard” (SMART Technologies, 2014).
It has been established that there are both advantages and disadvantages of using SMARTBOARD. It has been asserted that, “despite the abundance of technology available in many schools today, evident suggests that many teachers do not use it effectively or in a fully integrated manner” (Rakes et al., 2006, p. 412). This leads to a reduction in the number of teachers who have full consciousness in using the SMARTBOARD effectively in the classroom, which gives a negative impact. In general, using a spanking new method of teaching could not lead to success in the earlier stage of its formulation. A school teacher also engaged the same concept by stating that there is a possibility that the use of SMARTBOARD technology changes with time. Again, the SMARTBOARD technology seems new to most of the school children’s, and hence they are avoiding the idea of contacting the P.C.
Teachers are using the SMARTBOARD in various subjects. For instance, in mathematics, they use the board in adding and matching blocks and numbers. In science, they arrange the class activities via SMARTBOARD. Besides, there are several ways of making meaningful use of the SMARTBOARD. One of them includes note taking to remind the students of the main points. Students can convert the SMARTBOARD to initiate fun such as game (Oigara & Keengwe, 2011). It can also be used for brainstorming ideas. They also display different patterns of media such as graphs, maps, videos, and images. Particularly, by using such hardware one can change the look of the classroom and make it appear more modernized and unique. At the same time, the SMARTBOARD profile is smooth and elegant making it be fitted in any edge of the classroom. It is also a clean technology with broad applicability ( Professional Learning Board LLC, 2014). Above all, competing with technology in order to make a progression of education criteria is what teachers are aimed for.
In conclusion, this assignment has addressed a number of significant aspects, which show that the SMARTBOARD can be viewed from two different perspectives. In spite of the numerous advantages, the disadvantages associated with technology make it difficult to adopt for a long time and by new users. Nevertheless, it is clean and can actually accommodate various learning styles ( Professional Learning Board LLC, 2014). Educators can thus adopt the technology and make the necessary efforts to get rid of the few problems facing its adaptation and long-term use.
