In a 9-6 vote, an advisory panel to the Food and Drug Administration recommended on Wednesday that silicone breast implants be allowed back on the market after an 11-year hiatus. Only one silicone breast implant maker, the Inamed Corporation is left after the hundreds of thousands of lawsuits resulting from the ban of silicone implants in the early 1990s. Seeking the agency’s approval, Inamed Corporation has plans to educate women and to supply data on the device’s safety after it is approved and reintroduced as a safe and viable cosmetic surgery option.
Some doctors believe it is the patients right to choose with informed consent, but many don’t understand how Inamed Corporation has plans to educate women or a patient can have informed consent when the company only has to have two years complete of a 10-year study before they are allowed to start selling the implants on the market. Those who dissent feel this is not enough time to determine the long-term effects of a product.
Since Inamed is the one company on the market making silicon breast implants they knew that if they pushed this vote though they would be making profits soon. This controversy is about money and not technology. Without money (capital) you can’t have technology because it is part of production. When you start a new business you want to be making money as fast as possible so corporations try to push things through even if they are still unsure about some issues, including safety. With technology you would have more research and development put into the product before it was sold to consumers, especially if there has been past problems with this product. Inamed even said that it has seen a rupture rate of about 1 percent a year. Some feel that this is to high to be put back on the market. The FDA is supposed to protect the public from harmful products and this may create the perception that they are not fulfilling that obligation.
There are many values you could look at with this technology such, as is plastic surgery for everyone? Are the companies producing this product moral? What types of people want this kind of surgery and what problems do they have in their life? What are the sexual expectations of females in society to make them want this procedure? Is silicon really safe? Everyone has different values which will make them have different opinions about silicone breast implants and whether they choose to have them.
