Flack jackets, riot helmets and gas masks everything your child will need to go back to school this year. Is this what the future holds for our children? Democrat Carolyn McCarthy from New York thinks so, unless the government and parents can straighten up and put a stop to this unbearable new trend in society. Her counterpoint Tanya K. Metaska Executive director, NRA(national rifle association) institute for legislative action; chair, NRA Political Victory Fund says that instead of restricting guns from children, educate children about the laws for guns and children. There are enough guns in our society to equip everybody with one. It is not like you can recall all these guns and as long as people can buy guns they will, legally or illegally. So why not make them childproof store guns in giant aspirin bottles.
Bang, bang I was on my school bus arriving at school when I heard this sound, “big deal” I thought someone threw another firecracker on the bus. Then I see everyone pushing to get back on the bus I was at about row 5 or 6 at this time. Out of the corner of my eye I saw Antione Jackson a local gang member who had been shot by a .22 caliber rifle from a black car passing by, once in the shoulder and once in the leg by the front of the bus. Their must have been about 15 people who jumped back on the bus. Now at about row 10, pushed into a seat with Julia Montez and Carla Juares I finally realized what had happened. As the car drove away Antione jumped out of the bus on his good leg and gave them the finger. Carla and Julia were both crying. I was just stunned sitting there staring the aisle to see where my best friend Scott Nightingale was, what happened next I will never forget as he screamed in my ear “pop, pop” with his stupid high pitched voice scaring the crap out of me. For bus number 112 school would be canceled that day and I was alright with that, but spending more than half the day talking to police and councilors ruined my day off.
Now if there had not been a gang member riding on my bus would we have been shot at still? In that neighborhood it is possible; the buses all have to go through a very bad part of town to get into the school and where they park them kind of sit out in the open. Maybe changing the routes of the buses would help protect students from this sort of thing. Maybe making the entrance to the school in a new spot would help but I am not sure how much.
At my school there was a lot of violence related to gangs, some gangs were Bloods, Posole, Crips, and others as well. There was a fight at least once a week usually more, fights were kind of overlooked as long as no one was hurt bad. So to stop this we have to break up the gangs. To do this you have to make them work together in groups or make stricter punishment for gang-related deviance. Maybe a metal detector is needed in schools or random bag searches for those who participate in gangs or whatnot.
Now my experience was very gang-related in contrast to the more recent “take no prisoners” attitude of school shootings. In my eyes, the only distribution of guns should be to law enforcement not the public. Adults are not responsible enough to own guns and children should have no access to guns at all. But our society is so driven by action movies and “cops” television that there is almost no way to tell kids it is wrong to kill people. In an interview with Arnold Schwartsenegar in Maxim magazine, it was recorded that in 3 of his movies alone he racked up 427 murders, but he is the good guy?
