The Christian music industry is renowned for its many deep, thought-provoking songs, but there is none whose lyrics capture my mind like the song “Scarecrow”, written and composed by the band Skillet. This song is a reflection of the writer’s perspective of his life as a scarecrow. The artist proposes that we as Christians need to surrender everything to Christ in order to gain a meaningful relationship with Him. The chorus is divided into three different sections, each showing the three essential elements pertaining to our walk with God. The first concentrates on the knowledge part of a person’s relationship with God. The second entails the love and emotion that is involved. The last focuses on the servant aspect in our attempt to please God. The comparison of a scarecrow to the life of a human being seeking Christ may seem far-fetched to begin with, but careful evaluation of the wording in this song has shown many parallels. The first part of the verse refers the guilt and shame the scarecrow is dealing with. He feels alone in the world and is shameful of his “dirty clothes” which represent the sin in his unworthy life. This seems like the ideal analogy for the aimless, consumer driven lives of many “lukewarm” Christians in today’s society. The distractions of life keep getting in the way of truly focusing on God, bringing about a sense of shame and worthlessness.
The scarecrow, “Safe enough to not let go,” seems to have a sense of security in the known that prohibits him from letting go of everything and letting God take over. He is comfortable where he is and does not want to risk change. He also is fearful of the unknown as shown in the text, “Scared enough to not release.” He is not willing to sacrifice the safety of everything he knows to be true to venture into the unfamiliar. In the next line “Open up to drink the wind,” the “wind” symbolizes the Holy Spirit. The scarecrow finally comes to a point where he realizes that he needs God in his life and he invites the Holy Spirit to come in. This is applicable to the lives of many people, myself included. We as Americans have so many belongings and comforts that we are sometimes reluctant to make a move that might change our circumstances. We are content in our lavish lifestyles. If we would just give everything to God and let the Holy Spirit work in us, great things would happen.
In the first chorus of the song, the scarecrow asks God “Give me a brain that I might know you better.” The first step in growing in your relationship with God is to attain knowledge of His character through the Bible and prayer. Solomon prayed for wisdom and it was given to him. Therefore if you ask God for understanding and truly seek his face, He will become more existent to you and your relationship will grow.
The prayer of the scarecrow in the second chorus changes from “Give me a brain that I might know you better” to “Give me a heart that I might love you better.” After gaining an understanding of Christ’s love for him, the scarecrow desires to love Christ back. As a Christian gains a better understanding of Christ, a genuine love for Him will form. As we see everything that God has done for us, we cannot help but to love and worship Him.
The section “Hanging on a post just next to yours” is referring to the cross that Jesus was crucified on. The scarecrow realized that he deserved to die because of his “dirty clothes” representing sin, and that Jesus, the perfect sacrifice, took his place on the cross. When he came to this realization he was struck with great emotion, and wanted to “curse and spit” because of his newly obtained heart. He wept because of the abundant mercy of Christ.
The third chorus expresses the scarecrow’s desire to do something to show his dedication and loyalty to God as he prays, “Give me a life that I might serve you better.”
This servant attitude was brought about by a certain event that took place in the scarecrow’s life. The phrase “Hanging in the sun, waiting for the rain” seems to represent how although the scarecrow knew God, he was just sitting back and waiting for something to take place. He witnessed a field burning and found himself not doing anything about it. I believe the “burning field” symbolizes the many people who are cast into hell everyday because of unwillingness of Christians to spread the good news. The scarecrow faced this reality, as do many Christians today. Although they know and love God, they are still not willing to pick up their crosses and do something about the sinful progression of the world.
To fulfill God’s desire to have an intimate relationship with us, his children, we must lay everything down at His feet. Like the scarecrow in this song, we as Christians seeking a closer relationship with Him, need to recognize the importance of the three fundamentals in our walk with God. We must come to a point of knowing who He is, loving Him for his mercy, and finally carrying out His will in our life, before we can truly grasp the meaning of our lives as Christians.
