Mathematics and scientific studies have always fascinated me and created a strong attachment that motivated me to choose mathematics at the higher levels of learning. Mathematics is a pivotal subject in which many others like chemistry and physics depends on and hence acts as a good foundation for them. Mathematics is an intriguing subject because it is limitless and offers a wide range of opportunities for research and study, which has influenced the decision to study it as a teacher.
Prior education has enabled me to accumulate foundational knowledge in mathematics which is necessary for any math teacher. At Leeds City College, I was awarded an A* in maths at GCSE I level, which motivated me to take mathematics at A level. At the same level, I was awarded AA in double science awards and achieved an A in mathematics at A level before proceeding to the University of Nottingham, to take a master degree in a pharmacy.
Interacting with people of different ages in my work and also in volunteer activities have equipped me with teaching skills useful in life. In 2016, I undertook a volunteer program in the rural parts of East Africa and taught the community members on the ways of using medical equipment and maintaining general hygiene. I have also volunteered through my church by working with disabled children and assisting them with mathematical problems and assisting those experiencing learning difficulties. Other areas which offered me work experience includes working in a pharmacy in Ethiopia and at Lloyd Pharmacy and between 2018 and 2019. These volunteer and work activities have taught me the values of communication and organization that are crucial to me as a teacher, especially when interacting with the stakeholders. I easily understand and use verbal and nonverbal cues that enhance my communication in different contexts.
My hobbies include playing Sudoku, working with the community and reading which have exposed me to a variety of useful knowledge in mathematics, including analysis and logical skills. Teaching the youths has been my priority career since I feel this is what my life revolves around. Numbers are part of my life and enjoy it when helping young people understand some underlying puzzles and use them to understand puzzles. Young people have a lot of potentials that can be realized when handled well by the teacher with the required skills, and the training and latter career will thus expand mathematical knowledge through different interactions. It is, therefore, my hope that this training will enhance my skills in mathematics and teaching and enable me to advance the same to the students.
