Lifestyle of Pablo Picasso in different states

1901, before moving to Madrid Pablo Picasso was staying in Málaga with his friend Casagemas at his family’s house.  He outraged his family while staying there by staying out late, not dressing properly, visiting brothels, and ignoring his family members that the two were not allowed to stay with the family.  Pablo Picasso’s friend Carlos Casagemas passed away after committing suicide in front of friends at the Café de l’Hippodrome because of the failure with his girlfriend Germaine. Picasso finds out about the death of his friend while in Madrid. During his time in Madrid, Picasso paints the people that surround him while sitting on the street corners.  Picasso starts using pastels and paints to depict the different classes of the people.  When he would use the harlequins and the poorest class of society, as models he mostly used blacks and whites to portray the harshness of their lives. When he would paint the high-class people, he would use softer tones and seductive colors.  At this point of his life, he was just starting to reach his blue period (pre-blue period).

Picasso moved back to Paris and that’s where he went into his blue period.  It was after the visit to the women’s prison in Paris that turned him to use primarily blue. Picasso said, “It was thinking aboutCasagemas … that got me started painting in blue.” Picasso’s wanted his paintings to be primarily political.  He believed that the art explained pain and sadness without using words, that the painting could do all the talking needed. In October of 1901, Picasso painted beggars, very poor women who had children, blind men, harlequins, crazy people, and social outcasts.  Picasso did this as a social protest. In the winter, he paints a portrait called Autoportrait.  This portrait is a painting of him during the blue period. He depicts himself as unhappy, there isn’t a smile on his face, and the colors surrounding him are full of all blues and greens smeared together. On his pale white face, around his dark eyes and his cheekbones, there are different shades of blues and greens that define his face giving him a serious character.

By 1902, he breaks his contract with Mañach and moves back to Barcelona. In his studio, Picasso decides he wants to live an entirely blue life. For him, as a painter, his paintings were his life, so when he was painting everything in blue.  Each shade of blue he used was a feeling he was having at the time.  He sometimes mixed these blues with yellows and greens to depict different feelings he was having at that exact moment.  The blues that he used when he was in Barcelona were different shades of blue then he used while he was in Paris. While still in Barcelona, Picasso writes to his friend Max Jacob describing his life and his work.  He talks specifically about a drawing that he wants to send to Jacob.  Picasso writes, “I want to do a picture of this drawing I’m sending you. It’s a picture of a St-Lazare whore and a nun.”

In October, his uncle Salvador (one of the family members he stayed with previously) paid him to get out of the draft.  In 1901, when Picasso and Casagemas stayed with his family for that short time Picasso was in hopes of obtaining 1200 pesetas from his uncle for that exact purpose.  His uncle didn’t want Picasso to have the money after his performance when he came the first time but Doña Maria’s convinced him to give him the money.

Just days later he moved to Paris with two of his friends.  Picasso moved around for a while and then settled in with his friend Max Jacob.  The two were so poor that they burned their paintings to stay warm and could not afford canvases so they continued drawing in order to keep active with art.

After receiving money for one of his paintings, Picasso moved back to Barcelona. He stared visiting the brothels again, but this time he visited them with his room mate de Soto, who he often drew pictures of.  Picasso started having one of his best periods ever. One of his most famous paintings of this period was La Vie.  This painting contains a couple crouching in a far corner holding each other, a loving mother with her baby, a couple embracing love, and a lonely man who is all by himself.  This was another painting about his friend Casagemas.  Picasso’s only response about the painting was:

“I was not the one who gave it that title, ‘La Vie.’ I certainly had no intention of painting symbols; I just painted the images that rose before my eyes. It is for other people to find hidden meanings in them. As far as I am concerned, a painting speaks for itself. What is the use of giving explanations, when all is said and done? A painter has only one language”

The painting was sold on June 4, 1902 to M. Jean Saint-Gaudens. Saint-Gaudens was also a well-known artist. The painting he acquired was a painting that could have built a good reputation for any aspiring artist.

Picasso returned to Paris, with the hopes of becoming a great artist.  With this in mind, he knew that he would have to stay in France to make it possible.  He moved into a studio with Pablo Gargallo and lived a couple rooms away from JaumeSabartes who became a friend of Picasso.  Picasso visited Sabartes frequently and he ended up painted murals on the white walls of his studio, which were destroyed afterwards.  Picasso met a woman by the name of Fernande Olivier she became his first love.  Fernande was his main inspiration for his change in periods.  The couple stayed together until 1912, when the permanently broke up.  Picasso ended his Blue period and moved on to his Rose Period.
