As Masaya’s preceptor, the leadership skills I would consider modeling are communication skills to help them converse easily with rest. Another skill is motivation which they could skill on their own or from others in the practice. Positivity and trustworthiness that allow Masaya to cooperate with colleagues on activities that require a teamwork approach. Being a nurse, commitment, responsibility, and flexibility would help spearhead Masaya’s career to achieve more. Working together or owning the same title as a nurse does not mean that they were taught in the same way. Respecting each other and their performance skills is an important skill that helps us to learn more from each other. This allows one to learn new ways of doing things that may seem more sensible to incorporate into our daily practices.
Incivility, defined as low-intensity behavior that is deviant with the intention to harm the other individual is seen to be an issue in this setting. Some of the key behaviors that may portray incivility are rude comments about an individual or how they conduct themselves. Not only that but how they may come out in view of behavior or performance. Another behavior that may be termed as incivility is criticism from colleagues. Not only is it demoralizing but may discourage an individual. Although not so common in the practice, attacking a person’s integrity may come out as an incivility behavior that in many is not taken kindly or may cause major conflicts with colleagues. Ethnic jokes are another incivility that is rampant in the practice. Being nurses, we work in an environment where we are bound to meet with different ethnic groups. How we build relations will define how kind we will be to each other and ethnic jokes simply tarnish the respect that may have been built.
Themes in the article, video and civility index
The most common theme discovered in the three sources is that they cannot work together as a team without having respect for one another and the difference in nature. Although the nurse works together, there is a difference in the individual aspect and as such commands respect of this difference to be able to work together. Another theme is the cooperation of the nurse to ensure their patients are provided with the best quality of healthcare there is and enable them to recover. Finally, the theme of understanding since no one knows the best practices or all the answers. This promotes teamwork and commitment to working towards achieving the best for all stakeholders.
Role of delegation
In my view, delegation played an important role in ensuring all the nurses perform as required. Delegation in this issue allowed leadership skills to reign in the decision making and the settling of the issue. There was a chance to listen to what they had to say and make a decision based on the evaluation of the situation. The fact that Masaya was considered different from the rest and was being treated differently in pegged on the fact that the preceptor delegated her to perform in her capacity. This the others may view as favoritism and may cause the rise of issues just like the one in question. Even with delegating responsibilities, it is important that leaders consider the position of the other employees and how this may affect their performance, the cohesiveness of the team and the effectiveness of such a decision
