Introduction

Gender inequality has been a topic that has been in discussion for a very long time. The phrase that women are from Venus while men are from Mars explains the differences that are there between the two genders. It is thought that women are different; thus, their roles ought to be different from men, and thus the differences are inevitable. At times people are meant to think that men and women are naturally different. Such a thought is what brings about the gender inequality that has increased to gender biasness in society. It is this biasness that has caused the rising of the theory of feminism. Ideally, feminism may be described from an economic, political, or even cultural perspective. The feminists’ movements are often aimed at the establishment of equal rights and women protection. Even though the term feminism and feminist was not widely spread until in the 1970s, it was established by strong women in Europe and the Americas in the community by fighting for the rights of women. The paper below is a discussion on Female Equals.

Analysis of the discourse

Female Equals is seen in several domains. In the 19th and early 20th centuries, as will be discussed later, there was an introduction of the first wave feminists. Females worldwide have been facing different levels of inequalities. However, some women as role models in society have enlightened the women to fight for their rights.

Lt. Gen. Nadja West She was an army officer who was the first woman to become a major general (Abdullah, 2020). She was the 44th army surgeon General from 2015 to 2019. West’s being to the Major General’s position and serving in the army is iconic enough to encourage other women to fight for their rights. This is an encouragement enough that women can also do what men can do. It was formerly thought that the army was reserved for energetic men. However, with Major General West in power in the army, women are just as strong as men.

Besides, the US Army Surgeon General is deputized by Maj. Gen. Teliita Crosland. Crosland’s motivation includes that she never went into a room thinking that she was not supposed to be a woman or even a black person. People need to stop living in race, gender, or any other form of comparison.

Education is the key to everything. Crosland’s parents valued education, a factor that had an impact on her life. The same parents encouraged their siblings, Crosland, and her siblings to pursue their dreams. Thus, a person, be it a woman or a man, needs to keep trying to beat failure.

To succeed, Crosland asserts that people need to be kept accountable for their actions (Abdullah, 2020). When a person is held accountable for his or her actions, they will be in a position to do better, and they will never repeat the same mistake. In relation to female equals, men in society need to be held responsible for their oppression and discrimination. This way, they will never repeat such discriminations and, in turn, do better, which involves installing gender equality in society. Regardless of race, religion, or gender, human beings need to be caring and kind to one another.

Women’s discrimination is a global problem. Often, women face unequal treatment, abuse, and violence at home. Studies have pointed out that gender inequality results in poverty in society. Discrimination at work is seen where the women are paid 24% less than what women earn (OXFAM International, 2020). It is believed that when a woman takes control over the collective actions, it may help sustain women’s rights.

Feminists’ waves

This wave may be traced in the United Kingdom and the United States of America, and other countries, though most of the nations joined in the second and third waves. Feminists may be described in the three waves, the first wave seen in the nineteenth century and early twentieth century. Leaders included women like Susan B. Anthony, Alice Paul, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Lucy Stone, and Ida B. Wells, who, despite their disagreements, always came together and united over women’s equality (History.com Editors 2020). The second wave was in the 1960s and 1970s, and lastly, the third wave that extends from the 1990s to now. The activists from a feminist’s perspective advocated for women’s legal rights that included voting and property ownership, reproductive rights, and protection of a girl child from domestic violence, among other rights. In Britain, the campaigns towards women’s votes were successful. In 1918, for example, the Representation of the People Act 1918 was passed, which gave women of the age above 30 years, and owned houses a privilege to voting. This act was amended in 1928 to allow women above the age of 21 to vote.

Scholars have categorized the waves mentioned above according to their characteristics. The first wave was the women’s suffrage movement, seen in the nineteenth century and early twentieth century. It was majorly concerned with the right of women to voting. The second wave was for women’s liberation, and it started in the 1960s (Ashford Library, 2020). This movement advocated for the social and legal rights of women. The third wave in its actions seeks to react to the depicted failures of the second wave. It started in the 1990s, and the key leaders to this movement are Audre Lorde, Cherrie Moraga, and Chela Sandoval, among others.

Assessment of language in the discourses

Language is the expression of ideologies using sounds to create words that make sentences. Language may also be depicted in the culture and norms of certain people. Thus, it is formulated in a person’s thoughts. In these discourses, language is used to encourage women to rise and fight discrimination. Some women like Crosland, who states that people need to be held accountable for their actions, encourage women to hold men accountable for their discrimination. Besides, the language empowers women to go for any desires they want since they have the energy to do so. Thus the language is effectively used to empower women in the discourses.

While comparing the authors of books and articles, men seem to take a higher number than females. Women or generally, the girl child has been left behind in education. However, they discuss the essence of gender inequality (Sekewes, Fine & Haslam, 2018). To Sekewes, Fine, and Haslam, women need to be given the same opportunities as men. It is never true that women and men are from different species.

Comparison and Assessment of the discourses

All the discourses argue women’s discrimination. Discrimination is seen as a major way of slowing down economic growth. “Female Equals” aims to make sure that women and men enjoy similar rights in society. These discourses show how women have been downgraded and how society has not been equal to them. Female equal points at how the women initially did not have several rights, a domain that has continued to be seen in the contemporary world, thus raising the third wave.

In the education field, education was formally reserved for the boy child. However, with proponents like West and Crosland, being in army positions and having completed their education encourages women to also strive. Thus all the discourses call upon all women to come and unite against oppression in society.

Looking at these discourses, the waves were arranged categorically in that the initial wave gave way for the next wave. Here, knowledge from the previous wave was the standing, rather the foundation of the next wave. Ascertainably, these movements created after the 19th century could not bring their ideologies to support their stand. They had to source it from somewhere, from the initial or the starting movement, which is the first wave feminist.

Conclusion

In conclusion, Females equal is an important discourse in society. There is a need for people to pull together regardless of their gender, race, or religion. The three waves have tried to advocate for the rights of women and combat discrimination. Some women advocated from women as activists, while others became a role model for women in society, as seen above. Ideally, the language in these discourses was effectively used to empower the women in society. From the above text, it may be concluded that female equals are a domain that is critical since it encompasses politics, education, culture, and even the workplace. For a sustainable future, females equal is critical.

Female Equals means stopping all forms of discrimination against women in society. Notably, gender equality is essential for a sustainable future. Women’s empowerment to take up roles alongside boys helps develop an economy of a state or a country.

I agree with those who support gender equality in society since it is high time people have to move. People have to move away from their retrogressive ways; they have to stop their backward thinking about women being contented with home keeping and childrearing. There are a lot of better things that a woman can do. I agree with Crosland when she said people need to be held accountable for their actions. In relation to women equals, those oppressing women in society ought to be kept accountable for their oppressive ways. When kept accountably, they will not repeat the same mistakes.

Let us keep all a girl child in the class. There are several opportunities that, when a woman is equipped with appropriate knowledge, can do better. Salute to Lt. Gen. West and Maj. Gen. Teliita Crosland has shown that women can also take top leadership roles even in the military.

Indeed gender equality is the best strategy for achieving a stable economy. We are all people, bound by the same origin, defined by one species. Let us stop this notion that there is a gender from Mars, another one from Venus. In general, women need to be protected from all forms of violence and exploitation. The land laws need to guard women’s rights and elevate them to enjoy the same privileges as men since they are all the same.
