Rules and regulations are standards put up to guide persons on their conduct and actions to ensure there is order. For instance, if in a school, there were no rules then students would report to school at the time when they feel like and leave also as they please. They would choose whether to do their assignments or not, and there would be no repercussions. Consequently, teachers would again do whatever they feel like. Rules essentially enable the purpose of an organization or an institution to be reached. If it is a school, for example, the purpose of the school is to enhance literacy and educate the learners. Rules in the school ensure that learners are educated accordingly.

Since rules are restrictions and they prevent individuals from fulfilling their own will, but the purpose of the place they are in, be it the place of work or school; many people detest rules. They feel like rules create a small prison for them. However, rules make us focus on fulfilling our agenda without drifting away from what is expected of us to do. When laws are broken, people have to suffer the consequences of their actions.

Breaking rules always results in people getting punished. Punishment is done to discourage others who are likely to have thought of attempting similar actions or behaviours from doing so. Consequently, punishment is done to show that it is an offence to break the rules, and thus one cannot only get away. In schools, there are rules and regulations, and whenever students break the rules, they are punished. Punishment range differently from each degree of the offence. For example, a student who has stolen another student’s property cannot be punished the same way that one who has failed to attend class will be punished.

For extreme offences, schools usually suspend or expel students. The suspension is generally for severe crimes that have been done by the offender for the first time. However, when the offender has been found in the same misconduct more than once or is used to doing different extreme offences, then expulsion is the best action taken to punish the student.

Usually, before the decision to expel a student is reached, a committee should have sat down together with the student and the guardians of the student to discuss the actions of the student. However, punishment cannot be sufficient if the individual being punished has not realized his or her mistake. The first step toward correcting an individual has that individual realize that he or she has made a mistake then accept the mistake then accept to take whatever repercussions of that misconduct.

Extreme punishment is usually for offenders who are used to committing offences and have refused to change their behaviours. Similarly, it can be dispensed only if the circumstance is dire, for example, if life has been or has almost been taken away because of the action of the offender. When an offence is not within these categories, other less extreme ways of punishment can be employed.

When an offender of a small mistake is heavily punished, the individual is less likely to be corrected because they would be bitter that they are over penalized for a small offence. Instead, by the time the punishment will be completed, they will have turned wilder than they were initially because the feeling of bitterness will keep pushing them to get revenge for being mistreated.

Being expelled from school is embarrassing and will automatically affect the student’s social interaction with his or her fellows. They are highly likely to lose all good friends because everyone would think that they are a terrible influence since they got expelled from school. Also, when other students find out that their fellow was expelled from their previous school, they are likely to start teasing on the student, and it will destroy the way they associate with others.

Additionally, when a student is expelled from a school, the period when he or she will be at home while looking for another school will result in their academic performance being lowered. Most schools usually refuse to take in students who have been expelled because they fear that the student will commit the same offence that he or she engaged in his or her previous school and therefore they cannot risk it. By the time when the student will find a school that can take him or her back in, probably the student would have given up all hope of ever being in school again and thus during the duration before they get another school, the student is highly likely not reading, and it will affect their academic performance.

Getting a child out of school because of an offence may not necessarily teach the student how to behave better or even how to correct their mistakes. It releases the student into the freedom of becoming worse than he or she ever was or intended to be.
