Equality in Kurt Vonnegut’s story “Harrison Bergeron”

  1. How does equality in Kurt Vonnegut’s story “Harrison Bergeron” differ from the balance we claim to strive for in America?

Equality discussed in Kurt Vonnegut’s story is different from that of America. The author highlights that justice can be dangerous regarding its results and execution. The government officials mistreat Americans in this story. They do achieve equality or justice in both mental and physical state. It is evident that the beautiful one has to wear masks or harm themselves; the bright people in this story have to listen to noises that hinder their ability to process thoughts. The other group consists of the firm and graceful people, who have to adhere to the government’s order of wearing heavy things around their necks. Citizens in Vonnegut’s story start hiding their attributes, thus resulting in the insistence of full equality. Some of the citizens act this way for they know the goals that their government set, and again, they fear severe punishment that might follow if they do not obey the orders of the government.  The results of this desire for fairness is harmful. America changes to be a state of stupid and prolonged people.  The government mercilessly kills all gifted citizens. Equality does not prevail in this case due to the desire for personal freedom.

  1. “Harrison Bergeron” can be read as a critique of several economic and political systems. Explain how the story can be read as a critique of each of the following:

  1. Communism

The story, “Harrison Bergeron” critiques communism since all citizens are forced to be equal. However, communism fits in this story because equality is evident in the story, and government control is present too. From Vonnegut’s novel, it is clear that the government has accorded a lot of power to the leaders, and it cannot control it.

  1. Capitalism

This story reveals that the author designs it from an American point of view. The story could have been drafted in the contemporary period to display how the government has interfered with people’s privacy by moving to the extent of sharing compounds with its citizens. The rules they make in our society today are similar to those reflected in Vonnegut’s story.  They contain identical weigh, which is too heavy to bear. In this story, the author narrated the story of the wife, where the incidents symbolize the blind Americans who cannot realize that the government is controlling them in the name of controlling them.

  1. Imperialism/Monarchy/Dictatorship

Dictatorship is evident in this story through handicapper. This character does not embrace people who do not fit her ideas, and she severely tortures them. All people follow her and support her in confiding people they love without hesitating. The ironical part of this story is that handicapper is not equal.

  1. Explain how the story can be read as a critique of a relevant recent social convention known as “political correctness.”

This story is full of drama. For one, people expect the government to control them and watch their beloved ones as they obtain torture from the same government. All people that display their talents face pain from the government. Now, is it right to say that this society will never be better? The situation in our current culture is worsening. Some of the phrases used in describing various conditions are worse.  fir instance one can say that someone is vertically limited which sounds awful

  1. Describe a situation from your own experience or knowledge in which our contemporary world echoes the notion of equality in “Harrison Bergeron.” For example, in kid’s sports, such as soccer, there’s been a trend over the past few years not to keep score, give everyone equal playing time and give everyone on the team a trophy. How does such a system mirror the notion of equality in “Harrison Bergeron”? Do you think this approach to kid’s sports is a good idea? Why or why not?

This story matches the sports in our contemporary society. Most people claim that they are all equal, and there are no special people of which it is wrong. In any game played, there must be winners and losers. Therefore it will be wrong to say that all people are equal. A game can never be enjoyable without winners and losers. People in this story are not similar, and they possess different abilities. We cannot train children by using that statement, for they will not understand the meaning of differences or challenges. Most of the best lessons in life result from our failure or mistakes we make. How will they do their best when we lie to them that all people are doing well when they are not? In this story, th entire society is stagnant for entertaining mediocrity. Will this mediocrity affect this society?

In a society where people do not train children how to encounter hard times in their lives, there are numerous reports of a shooting and other ill activities in schools. Such children will never accept a NO for an answer. When things do not work out well, they will feel disappointed. Such children believe in the power to obtain what they have not earned. Anger in this context results in violence, and that is why most schools have recorded a high number of shootings in our contemporary society.

  1. Cheers regarding the post and I find yourself being back to read a lot more! Just looking at some blogs, seems a reasonably nice system you happen to be utilizing. Im currently making use of WordPress for some my blogs but Im not happy with it up to now. Im searching to alter 1 of these more than to some platform similar to yours (BlogEngine) like a trial operate. Anything in particular youd suggest?

  2. Good luck getting people behind this one. Though you make some VERY fascinating points, youre going to have to do more than bring up a few things that may be different than what weve already heard. What are trying to say here? What do you want us to think? It seems like you cant really get behind a unique thought. Anyway, thats just my opinion.

  3. I must say, as much as I enjoyed reading what you had to say, I couldnt help but lose interest after a while. Its as if you had a fantastic grasp to the topic matter, but you forgot to include your readers. Perhaps you should think about this from extra than 1 angle. Or maybe you shouldnt generalise so very much. Its better if you think about what others may have to say instead of just heading for a gut reaction to the topic. Think about adjusting your personal believed process and giving others who may read this the benefit of the doubt.

  4. Im curious if you ever have problems with what people post? The internet never used to be like that, except that recently it seems to have become better. Do you agree?
