Bishop poems have unique techniques. Her poems have casual and conversational tones that put the audience or the reader alert. They are often accompanied by hesitation and questions to mark transitions and enable the readers to reflect on the subject matter. This is revealed in the, “One Art”. The tone of the poem is that of the main character speaking. The character explains how she lost things that ranged from minor to major ones. The persona later denies that none of the losses was disastrous. Conversation tone maintains the attention of the audience and makes them keep listening.
Bishop also perfectly applied ‘shift’ in her works to incorporate different environments as well as situations. The shift is done in terms of rhythm, subject, and tone. In “Poem”, Bishop portrays a voice of true feeling by saying, “I am nothing special, just any old poem, I am nobody. Who are you?. The expression warns the audience not to expect too much. I am trying to focus on the “Poem”, from the book, “Geography III. The poem reveals the technique of building curiosity of the reader. The first stanza describes the painting but does not give precise information of what can be depicted from it. Bishop’s poems create suspense making the reader to want to know the next event. In the first stanza of the “Poem”, Bishop is at first deceptive but reveals the painting in the second stanza. She decides to disclose the details of the painting. The poet is also observed to use his environment in his poems. In the second stanza of the “Poem”, he talks of “gabbled wooden houses painted that awful shade of brown”. This a characteristic of the houses in Nova Scotia which she spent some time in childhood.

Eckert portrays Bishop as dedicated poet who brewed his work perfectly to make them good. He was too patient to keep the idea for 20 years just working on the poem until it pleased him. “The Moose” describes the power of nature and its influence on the modern lives of human beings. Bishop reveals her life in Nova Scotia. She lived in Nova Scotia with her grandparents after her father’ death. The poet likes reflecting on her life in Nova Scotia as she included it in many of her poems. In “The Moose”, the poet starts with a lyrical note explaining the towns and landscape in Nova Scotia. For example, the line “narrow provinces” has two meanings. The first one is the obvious geographical layout of the region probably talking of a kind of inadequacy. The second meaning is the lives of residents of the region. It implies the desperate lives led by the inhabitants of the province. She farther describes the diet as “of fish and bread and tea”. The repetitive nature of the sentence affirms the monotony of diet taken by the people of the region. “The Mouse” reveals the hard life that Bishop went through in childhood. This followed the death of her farther and institutionalization of her mother due to mental illness.

The Fish
The poet gives a sense of intimacy by the use of first person. This poem reveals Bishop as a fisherwoman who was very keen. She did fishing while living in Florida. The use of a speaking tone also draws the attention of the reader. Bishop describes how she catches a “tremendous fish” using a rented boat. Bishop struggles to pull the fish out of the water and gives it human qualities. She refers to it as “venerable” which is a term used to describe respected people in the society. Unexpectedly, the fish does not fight but limply hangs on the hook. The looks at the fish closely and realizes that it is old, ugly, and large. Otherwise, she affirms that the fish deserves respect. The fish is portrayed to have been suffering in the water by being infested by sea-lice and barnacles. The poet uses imagery to enable the audience to picture out the appearance of the fish. Similes have also been used to compare the animal nature to human beings. Bishop realizes that the skin of the fish looks like that of human beings. She concludes that the fish not different to human nature after fighting many battles. Bishop succeeds to appreciate suffering in human life. This is closely related to her life in childhood after she had lost her father as well as got detached from her mother. The theme of the poem enables to appreciate that suffering is part and parcel of life because even animals go through the same.

The prodigal son
Bishop was a poet who was concerned with virtues of moral living. For instance, the prodigal son is a bible story. It involves a son who tells the father to give him his share of wealth. He takes his share and indulges in a luxurious life until all the money is over. He then comes back but the father still welcomes him. The story of The Prodigal son is closely related to Bishop’s life in Alcoholism. Following her life experience, she was inspired to write the poem “The Prodigal”.
The poem is a metaphor of alcoholism on the part of the poet. The prodigal is reduced to the live with pigs such she cannot realize it. He does not feel awkward to live with the pigs. Furthermore he lacks the ability to look and stand back at his life and visualize how the situation is dreadful. The pigs are filthy and smelling but the prodigal enjoys their company. He does all these but retains her human nature. He realizes that she does not belong to the environment. Alcoholism reduces the prodigal to live with animals but still has some hopes. Bishop succeeds in relating immoral social activities such as alcoholism with the story of the prodigal son. This is also gives some hope as people can resume to their normal lives after backsliding to immoral activities. The poem also reveals that immorality makes people behave awkwardly but they cannot realize. The tone of the first section of the poem is depressing and bleak. The second section has a hopeful tone.
