This story is very interesting and it works as a mirror in which the society can reflect itself particularly the civic and national identity. It impacts me by letting me reflect on my personal and civic attitudes towards neighbors and triggers my need for the virtue of compassion and reminds me on the impact of literally erecting walls between ourselves and neighbors (Melville Web). The story has also influenced my thoughts on the significance of impacting society’s daily language implying that introducing a new language into conversation with some inscrutable intention may leave a mark on people’s minds.
The setting of the story is vital in understanding the occurrences in the story and shows that the location, Wall Street, should be taken into account from the beginning. The setting of the Wall Street and the law firm helps in understanding that the story is in an urban setting and further invites me to think specifically about America and the issues the story raises about America’s citizens. Melville, by using the subtitle “a Story of Wall Street” makes one think that he had contemplated what the city would be in future (Melville Web).
The characters are very interesting and hard to understand especially the narrator whose thoughts and sincerity to help Bartleby are not clear. The characters are also isolated from one another and this aspect has greatly revealed the theme. The author has used the characters to communicate to the reader that isolation is like a death of the human spirit (Melville Web). The writing style used in this story is , descriptive, slyly comical and makes an individual appreciate Melville’s master of prose.
