JB Priestley explores the links with all the characters to a very high level. He emphasizes each of the character’s personality to make sure that the reader understands a person so much so that they can almost feel as though they are in that same situation as the described character. For example Mr. Birling is renowned for his strong personality and his capability to get a point across as the senior relative of the family. He also makes it quite clear that he has been the Lord Mayor of the town before and that he has strong, well-known relationships with all the senior police officers. My impressions of each character in the play are as follows: He is a very strong and politically correct person (or so he likes to think) and he likes nothing more than a good argument or debate. Even if he is not right or in the wrong he still doesn’t like to admit it. Mrs. Birling as being Mr. Birlings wife doesn’t tend to say much. She just likes to agree with whatever Mr. Birling has to say and she sticks up for Sheila. Referred to as Mrs. B she takes on the role of agreeing with whatever the family decides is best. She is very much a housewife and without the roll of being Mr. B’s wife I don’t honestly think that she would be anywhere at all.
Eric is a very likeminded individual and he is Mr. B’s little toy, Eric is supposed to be marrying Sheila, but this is probably just because of the family’s well-known name and he also being a factory owner likes and respects Mr. Birling a lot. Plus there is the fact of the money that is unlived within the family and this just might come in useful in the future to Eric.
Their status in the play is one of a well-known high class and very important family. Their lives revolve around the name of ‘Birling’ and of the money that is earned through the mills and business. The play helps project an image of people’s lives in the early 19c. The people being very snobbish and upper class.
The story is all about a rich family that has a well-known reputation and would not like it to be spoilt by things that happen or might damage their reputation as a very prestigious socialist group of people. There are six characters in the play and I have written about three of them. Mr. Birling being the main one. It is revolved around a girl called, “Eva Smith”. Each of the characters have had some involvement with a girl by the ‘so-called’ name of Eva Smith. As you read the book the story all becomes clear. For example Mr. Birling fired her and then Mrs. B had complained about her in a shop where they regularly shop. Eric had had an affair with her and caused her to get depressed, in the end she committed suicide.
The inspector calls around and starts to blame each one on their own and this leads to arguments and disputes between the families. After all this had happened the inspector leaves and he then leaves the family to settle their miseries. They get a phone call afterwards from the hospital saying that there is an inspector on his way to question the death of a girl called Eva Smith. This proves that the inspector wasn’t one at all and he was just pretending to be one. Also the girl Eva Smith was different each time the inspector showed the pictures. This was to create the effect to each separate family member that the girl was all of the same. But at no time in the play does the inspector show the picture to two or more family members at the same time. Therefore they all thought that the photo was the same each time, but actually it wasn’t the same photo. This was because each of the family members had an encounter with a girl that was in a picture designed for them. For example Mr. Birling got shown a picture of a girl he had fired a while back because she and some others got the idea of asking for a pay rise, this lead on to her being fired from her job as a worker at the factory. When he was shown the photo it was of the girl he had fired, but when Mrs. Birling got shown the photo it was of a completely different girl that she had got fired from an upper class dress shop in town. They both thought that the photo was of the same girl Eva Smith but it wasn’t, this was the reason along with a few others that they all thought that led to her suicide. The play is just about each of their confessions about their affairs and to do’s with Eva Smith.
