Tien says that educational opportunities for inner-city minorities are contritely different from students in the suburbs, which are mainly occupied by white families. Tien claims a diverse community provides an improved educational environment. that it is better to have more of a diverse community. Students learn to interact with one another and all races gain knowledge from these experiences (Tien 54). So I live in a box, not of my own making, and on the box is a label, not of my own choosing (Carter 1). Carter tells how you can not determine your race before you are born. You are who you are. Tien explains his experience on a bus in 1956 where black people in the back and white people claimed the front (Tien 53). There, Tien became confused as to where to sit and did not ride the bus again for a year. Also, Tien served as a teacher at Louisville where a fellow professor addressed him as “Chinaman” (Tien 53). The use of affirmative action in some ways can be tolerated.
Affirmative action can benefit some. People who are of a different race have better chances of getting into a school. A student will be looked over a little harder because of their race. Schools that were predominately white, now have a more integrated body of students. They now have to go by guideline given to them. The admissions office will look into a minority’s life a lot harder. Tien claims that he has seen affirmative action work (Tien 54). You can recognize the diversity of students as you walk across the a campus. Students enter the college with higher test grades and scores than their predecessors (Tien 53). Tien claims the absence of affirmative action would deny talented youth acceptance into colleges and universities (Tien 54).
Tien claims that colleges and universities would slip backwards if affirmative action ceased to exist, when in reality universities would progress (Tien 54). Affirmative action is an unequal law. I think that those who run our colleges and universities are every bit as responsible for the politics of difference as are minority students (Steele 142). Affirmative action provides benefits to people just because of their race or ethnicity. How can someone argue that everyone should have equal rights when they want an advantage just because of their race? These people are hypocrites. Everyone should have equal rights and no one should receive a special grant because of their race. For students, all admissions should be based on academic qualifications and certain specialties that a student may possess. Even Tien reports that the two Asian American Regents who voted to end affirmative action believe that “the only fair approach is to base admissions on academic qualifications” (Tien 52).
Tien lacks evidence to support his argument. Tien strongest arguments are the circumstances he first experienced when he came to the United States in 1956 (Tien 53). What does racial separation on a bus back in the fifty’s have to do with affirmative action today (Tien 53)? Also in the fifty’s, a professor would refer to him as “Chinaman” (Tien 53). This has absolutely nothing to do with affirmative action and is totally irrelevant to his argument. Tien says that “serious racial divisions remain,” but does not elaborate on this. Nowhere in his argument does he elaborate in any way that “serious racial divisions remain”(Tien 53). Just because Tien states an opinion does not make it a fact, especially when it contains no supporting evidence.

Students realize that they may have the better qualifications to fill a spot at a university, but will not receive that spot because they are not a minority. How are experiences like this going to improve relations between students in the United States? Even Tien supports this fact by claiming interactions between students of different backgrounds can bring misunderstanding. Some white students tell me they feel squeezed out by black and Latino students they believe does less deserve”(Tien 54). Even Tien states that because of affirmative action, students become angry and have misunderstandings with members of other cultures.
Tien himself is a supporter of why affirmative action is not necessary. As a minority from China who came to America with nothing, Tien has overcome barriers to become the chancellor of the University of California at Berkeley without the benefit of affirmative action. Tien went at great length in his argument to mention all that has been accomplished. It is almost ridiculous that Tien would support affirmative action when he, himself, is a great example of why affirmative action is not needed in today’s society. Tien has done research in heat transfer, which has resulted in better nuclear safety and better space design, all without the help of affirmative action (Tien 52). Tien has taught students who are professors and researchers at some of America’s best schools and business concerns, without the aid of affirmative action (Tien 52).
Affirmative Action gives certain rights to people because of their race. This is racial discrimination and no race should ever be discriminated. Racism undoubtedly exists, but it no longer has the power to thwart blacks or any other group in achieving their economic, political, and social aspirations (D’Souza 525).
